What is Poplin Fabric?

What is poplin fabric and what type of decoration works best for these styles?

Poplin is a plain weave fabric and is terrific for embroidery and emblem decorations. Decoration on these shirts is a fantastic way to build brands and showcase a logo design.

Many names for fabric are not fiber-specific- Poplin can come in many fibers. As to the term ‘plain-weave’, that refers to the physical structure of the weave and how the threads come together – “Each weft thread crosses the warp threads by going over one, then under the next, and so on. The next weft thread goes under the warp threads that its neighbor went over, and vice versa.” from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plain_weave

You can see the difference between the tiny checkerboard appearance of a plain weave and the diagonal lines present in a twill, due to the 2/1 or 2 over, one under weaving pattern used to create it rather than the 1/1 pattern in the plain-weave.
